The idea that cell tower radiation causes cancer used to be the fodder for conspiracy theories before, although I personally do agree with the radiation part causing cancer. But, the latest scientific evidence shows that that concept is conclusively true.
The world’s biggest animal study of cell tower radiation conducted by the Ramazzini Institute in Italy revealed the very real dangers of exposure to environmental levels of cell tower radiation. The study’s researchers subjected 2,448 rats to 1.8 GHz GSM radio frequency radiation in amounts that copied those emitted by cell tower antennas for 19 hours a day.
Results showed that female rats had a higher chance of developing malignant brain tumor. On the other hand, all rats showed a higher chance of developing precancerous conditions and Schwann cell hyperplasia.
To make the study more comprehensive, the study’s researchers followed the rats’ saga until their natural death, assuming that majority of human cancers usually occur after a person reaches 60 years old and beyond. They did catch the rats still developing cancerous tumors at a later time in their lives.
The researchers concluded that their findings are enough to submit to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to take another look at the cancer-causing effect of radio frequency radiation on humans.
The study used much lower amounts of radio frequency radiation than those used by supposedly “safe limits” set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which means these are levels of radiation that people are commonly being subjected to.
Pregnant women and children – more susceptible to frequencies
Pregnant women and children are cautioned by the study’s researchers to be careful of these low frequency waves, as the study found out that animals subjected to these frequencies usually produce small offspring. The scary part is that the FCC limits being used now were set 20 years ago, which means these limits have to be reassessed since cell phone usage have increased tremendously since then.
Currently, several countries have already set stricter regulations on cell phone tower radiation than the U.S., namely the countries of Italy, India, Russia, and China. This group is joining public health experts from countries like France, Israel and Belgium in asking the private sector and governments to implement measures to make cell technology use safer. Part of this would include campaigns educating the public on how to make use of cell phone technology safer for them.
Technology companies could look into changing also their hardware and software in order to reduce people’s exposure to harmful radio frequencies.
Late last year, the California Department of Public Health released new guidelines on how people can safely use their cell phones by practicing measures to keep cell phone radiation exposure at a minimum. One of these safety measures is to sleep with their cell phones far from their heads, or to turn off the wifi when they sleep.
